PHOTO: Scott Johnson\/Beaverton Project Manager-Facilities Development<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Oregon Chapter the Association of Civil Engineers was just mentioned in\u00a0an <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.asce.org\/oregon-asce-members-make-resiliency-a-priority-in-school-district\/?utm_campaign=Comm-20150918-ASCEnews%20Weekly&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Eloqua\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> on making resilience a priority for school districts. \u00a0The article from ASCE News, focuses on the efforts of the Beaverton School District to adopt the findings of the Oregon Resilience Plan (ORP) for schools. The ORP&#8217;s \u00a0goals were to ensure that schools can be reopened thirty days after a Cascadia earthquake, and recommended that they be used for community shelters following the earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>Although it focuses on the three\u00a0ASCE members involved\u00a0in the effort, I was also worked\u00a0on the project\u00a0as a sub-consultant for\u00a0SEFT, Inc., \u00a0Kent Yu&#8217;s firm. Kent led the the Oregon Resilience Plan effort when he was chair of the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Committee (which I also worked on). \u00a0Chris Poland helped\u00a0create the Resilient City study done\u00a0by SPUR for the City of San Fransisco, which the ORP used as a core document.<\/p>\n<p>The Beaverton School District is to be commended for its leadership in this effort. \u00a0The\u00a0District\u00a0intended this to be a model project and\u00a0it is\u00a0making the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beaverton.k12.or.us\/depts\/facilities\/Documents\/150710_Beaverton%20School%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> available to other school districts and communities to learn from their efforts.
