{"id":1135,"date":"2015-02-05T21:36:37","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T21:36:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jayraskinarchitect.com\/?p=1135"},"modified":"2015-05-04T22:24:04","modified_gmt":"2015-05-04T22:24:04","slug":"opbs-whats-my-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jayraskinarchitect.com\/?p=1135","title":{"rendered":"OPB&#8217;s What&#8217;s my Risk?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1136\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1136\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jayraskinarchitect.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/US_Navy_110315-N-2653B-107_An_upended_house_is_among_debris_in_Ofunato__Japan__following_a_9_0_magnitude_earthquake_and_subsequent_tsunami_awfg1q.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1136\" alt=\"Photo Courtesy of US Navy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jayraskinarchitect.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/US_Navy_110315-N-2653B-107_An_upended_house_is_among_debris_in_Ofunato__Japan__following_a_9_0_magnitude_earthquake_and_subsequent_tsunami_awfg1q-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy of US Navy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the anniversary of the last Cascadia earthquake and tsunami 315 years ago, OPB has done an excellent series of stories called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opb.org\/news\/series\/unprepared\/\">Unprepared: Will We Be Ready for the Megaquake?<\/a>&#8221; \u00a0 As the articles points out, a large Cascadia earthquake and tsunami can occur anytime, and it reviews how prepared we are and compares it to the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. \u00a0They also have a nice little app called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/opb-news-interactives\/earthquake\/critical-buildings\/index.html\">What&#8217;s My Risk<\/a>&#8220;. \u00a0You can put in your address to see where critical buildings are located nearby and what their risk of collapse are. \u00a0 At the bottom of the page, \u00a0you can find out if \u00a0your local school has been retrofitted. \u00a0 The information was available online, but the app shows it in an interactive and friendly way, making this information more transparent. \u00a0This is an exciting development.<\/p>\n<p>It would be great if it could be expanded to show the condition of the bridges and major transportation routes, to include more types of buildings (such as hospitals and government buildings), and the amount of time it will take to get \u00a0lifeline utilities such as water, waste, electricity, gas, and telecommunications back on line. \u00a0For coastal communities there is also an incredible amount of data about the vulnerabilities of communities to tsunamis. \u00a0This information was collected from census data shows very detailed information about populations, land use, location of critical and essential facilities, and economic assets. \u00a0This data is out there, but again, not easy to find, or to understand.<\/p>\n<p>While the initial impression can be depressing (OPB&#8217;s title was apt, we are not prepared) this app gives us tool to make things better. \u00a0Take a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/opb-news-interactives\/earthquake\/critical-buildings\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">app<\/a>. \u00a0If you don&#8217;t like what you see, talk to your school district and essential services providers. \u00a0They will likely say that they don&#8217;t have the money and need help. \u00a0This doesn&#8217;t get them off the hook, but it may mean you should talk to your local elected offices, state legislators as well.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, we don&#8217;t have to fix things and solve this problem all at once. \u00a0We do need to keep at it though. \u00a0The Oregon Resilience Plan figured that setting a goal of 50 years was reasonable. \u00a0Chances are we have that amount of time and it spreads the cost out.
