Harrington House
![]() |
This beachfront residence is for a full time resident.
The house reflects the local beach house in form and details, but provides
outdoor as well as special wood, metal and stone details. Special care
was taken to provide views from rooms that were well removed from the
beach front, at the back of the house. The windows in the living room
and kitchen have deep sills to frame the ocean views and provide a sense
of protection during winter storms. Since the lot was long and deep, the garage was left near the street and connected to the main house by a breezeway which creates a sequence of outside spaces. This sequence of spaces was continued inside the house by creating a long corridor fron the entry area that passes by a patio before coming to the living area. The patio opens to the south and is protected fron the northwest winds to provide pleasant outdoor space for much of the year. |

The upstairs
deck was designed with the same idea of providing protected outdoor
spaces. It is recessed somewhat into the house and has shingled half
walls that make for a comfortable place to be in, even when the wind
is blowing. Inside the house, the carpenting has details in different
types of wood. Maple floors, fir trim and cherry cabinets create a harmonious
mix of tones. Copper is used both inside and out and is seen as a recurring
theme in the guardrails, copper light fixtures, and cabinet faces. The
house has a combined living/dinning, kitchen with a pantry, four bedrooms,
two offices, utility room, and a garage with storage and workroom.
